Annotations

This letter had at least three intermediaries. The letter was handed to Spinoza by someone to whom he refers to later as a ‘friend of mine’. That friend, according to Spinoza’s own testimony, had received it in turn from ‘an Amsterdam Bookseller’ (Jan Rieuwertsz Sr most likely). The latter bookdealer had been given the letter by a certain ‘Mr Ser.’ who can be nobody else than Pieter Serrarius.
